Past adoption practices have a life-long impact

A new study has found thousands of Australians involved in past adoption practices are still living with the effects without access to appropriate support.AIFS Research Fellow, Pauline Kenny said the study estimates about 200,000 Australians had been affected by past adoption practices and there was a need for more services to address their needs.The study surveyed over 1500 participants across Australia including mothers and fathers separated from children by adoption, adoptees, adoptive parents, wider family members and professionals currently working with affected individuals. UK adoption trends

The Office for National Statistics has published an annual statistics bulletin on adoptions which took place following court orders in England and Wales in 2011. Figures on adoption orders apply to adoptions by relatives and stepparents as well as adoptions from care. Foreign adoptions are also included if they meet the legislative requirements and where an application has been made for registration.There were 4,734 adoptions entered into the Adopted Children Register (ACR) following court orders made in 2011, which is a 6% increase over 2010. There have been small fluctuations in the number of adoptions over the last decade.The ONS reports that adoptions also increased in Scotland between 2010 and 2011 by 6%, from 466 in 2010 to 494 in 2011 (General Register Office for Scotland, 2012). No data for adoptions in Northern Ireland in 2011 is currently available.Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v1.0.
