Plans for almost 500 flats in Glasgow built-to-rent development gets the green light

A £100 million build-to-rent (BTR) development made up of nearly 500 apartments on the banks of the Clyde in Glasgow has been passed by council planners. The detailed planning permission was agreed as part of a broader plan at the Clydeside Central Quay site which also includes 300,00 sq ft of commercial space and a 150-room hotel.

Designed by Glasgow-based architects Keppie, the site will be a mix of studio, one, two and three-bedroom apartments for rent. On completion, these flats will be spread across four blocks ranging from six to 20 storeys high.

Led by developer and operator of private rented housing, PLATFORM_, the major construction is expected to start in the third quarter of 2019, with completion to be in 2021.

With nearly 140,000 BTR homes either complete, under construction, or in the planning stages, the BTR sector is growing at a rapid rate. Development director at PLATFORM_, Matt Willcock, said:

“Build-to-rent is soaring in popularity across the UK for people who want flexible, sociable and cost-effective living, with the ability to walk or cycle to work high on the agenda.”

Similar to PLATFORM_’s previous projects, rent amounts will be priced to be in line with what is affordable for more than 50 per cent of the local workers.

Chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, Stuart Patrick, was positive about the difference this commercial space will make to the area:

“A development of this scale is a real boost for the Broomielaw, bringing 500 new homes to an area perfectly situated between the city centre and West End.”
