4% rise in new build homes completed in 2018

The recent quarterly statistical publication has shown that 18,182 new build homes were completed across all sectors in the twelve months to September 2018; 695 homes (or 4%) more on the previous year.

The 4% increase included:

  • - a 25% rise (or 618 homes) in housing association completions,
  • - a 25% increase (or 306 homes) in local authority completions, and
  • - a drop of 2% in private-led completions.

 

There were 5,079 new build homes completed in quarter 2 of 2018; a 9% rise on April and June 2017.

New build starts

4,697 new build homes were started between April and June 2018, 6% (306 homes) down than the same quarter in 2017.

This brings the total for the year to end June 2018 to 19,903 for new build starts across all sectors; a figure which is 6% (1,120 homes) higher than the number of completions in the same period, but a decrease of 6% (1,231 homes) on the 20,534 homes started in 2017.

The 6% decrease included:

  • - private-led starts dropping by 11% (1,593 homes),
  • - housing association approvals falling by 4% (215 homes), while
  • - local authority starts increasing by 48% (577 homes).

 

Affordable homes in Scotland

Overall, this data shows a 21% rise in the number of affordable homes delivered in Scotland in the past year. The official statistics highlight more than 80,000 affordable homes have been provided since 2007, with 8,767 affordable homes delivered in the 12 months to the end of June 2018.

Kevin Stewart, Housing Minister, explained:

“Making sure everyone has a safe, warm and affordable home is central to our drive for a fairer and more prosperous Scotland.

During the course of this Parliament we are investing more than £3 billion to deliver our target of at least 50,000 affordable, high-quality homes, including 35,000 homes for social rent.”
